Residence permit in Bulgaria
Foreigners, nationals of EU or non-EU Member State, must apply for and obtain a residence permit if they plan to reside in Bulgaria on a long-term basis, i.e. for more than 90 days (3 months). There are 2 main types of residence permit for foreigners staying in Bulgaria:
• Long-term residence permit – issued for a period of five years (for EU citizens) and for one year ( for non-EU citizens)
• Permanent residence permit – issued for an indefinite period of time
There is also a third type which is called “Extended residence permit” issued for a period of up to one year.
Long-term residence permit: Applicants for a long-term residence permit must apply for it within 90 days of their arrival in Bulgaria or if you have Bulgarian company. The necessary set of documents is provided to the National Migration Directorate in Sofia. The application form which has to be filled in is in Bulgarian. The long-term residence certificate is issued on the same day.
Permanent residence permit: After five years residency in Bulgaria (5 years without absence of more than six consecutive months), the foreigner can submit an application for permanent residency.
Permanent residence permits are issued by the Bulgarian Ministry of Interior. Once the applicant is provided with permanent residence permit, he is entitled to the same rights as a Bulgarian citizen, except the right to vote. The permit is issued within two months after submission of the documents.
Another way for foreign nationals to apply for permanent residence is the marriage with a Bulgarian citizen or foreigner with permanent residence in Bulgaria for five years.
